Biography

DENNIS BANKS  Native American leader, teacher, lecturer, activist, and author, was cofounder of the 1968 American Indian Movement (AIM), which was established to protect the traditional ways and rights of Indian people.Banks founded Sacred Run (1988-2006) to promote the sacredness of all living things and has led runs across the United States, Canada, Japan, Australia and Europe. In Feb 2008, Banks led the 30th Anniversary of The Longest Walk of 1978,  from San Francisco to DC. 

In 1993 Banks recorded Still Strong with Grammy Award winning Producer Narada Michael Walden;  has had key roles in the films War Party, The Last of the Mohicans (1992), Thunderheart (1992) and more recently, HBO's Buried My Heart At Wounded Knee starring Adam Beach. 

Banks stays involved in American Indian issues, including AIM, and travels the globe lecturing, teaching Native American traditions, and sharing his experiences. He is co-founder of the Nowa Cumig Institute &  Great Anishinabe Canoe Race ( Yamamoto Cup ), bringing Native American Youth to Japan every fall for Cultural Exchange.   In late 2009 , a Dennis Banks documentary film will be completed. In 2010 the book “ Ojibwa Warrior”  will be published in Japan.   Current information on Dennis Banks' activities can be found on www.nowacumig.org and www.longestwalk.org.

Still Strong CD Front

DENNIS BANKS
and RED HOT first teamed up in the 1990's to collaborate on a recording entitled Still Strong, featuring traditional Native American music as well as original songs by Dennis Banks & friends.  Still Strong was produced by acclaimed producer, Narada Michael Walden, and features many talented artists who so generously gave their time and support to this project. Originally released on cassette only, Still Strong has been re-released on CD, and is now available through Red Hot Promotions.

Proceeds benefit Dennis Banks' nonprofit organization, Nowa Cumig Institute, which supports Native American Youth programs and the Leech Lake Reservation For more information go to www.nowacumig.org

Also featured on the Still Strong CD are many special guests.  Lending their Vocals and drumming rhythms are members of Dennis' family and his friends from the Native American community.  Migwitch!
