Canoeists to vie for prestigious YAMAMOTO CUP
Dennis Banks, aka, Nowa Cumig, Elder of the Anishinabe Nation at beautiful Leech Lake Indian Reservation, Leech Lake, Minnesota, is founder and host of the Annual Great Anishinabe Canoe Race.
The 2nd Annual Great Anishinabe Canoe Race
Scheduled for July 4th and 5th, 2003, on the Leech Lake Reservation in Northern Minnesota. The canoeists will be competing for the prestigious YAMAMOTO CUP. This cup, named after environmental businessman Masao Yamamoto, is a silver and gold chaliced 12" canoe set on a 14" high silver stem, and anchored to a mahogany base. M. Yamamoto is from Tokyo, Japan, and will be present to award the cup to the winners. The chaliced canoe prize remains stationary at Leech Lake.
In addition to the gold, silver and bronze medals, the primary purpose of the canoe event is to: "instill pride, strengthen the Anishinabe culture, strengthen the individual, and strengthen
the spirituality of each individual" - Dennis Banks.
