As the highlight of the opening night of the 9th Annual North Beach Jazz Festival, David Amram will play with veteran bassist Peter Barshay and guitarist, Jeff Massanari. Joining the trio will be guest singer Dorka Keehn. Following the tradition started by David Amram and Jack Kerouac, who pioneered the first-ever jazz poetry reading given in NYC in 1957, the Barry Brothers will bring their poetry and stories to the stage.
This not to be missed event will take place from 7:00 PM – 11:00 PM on
July 30, 2003 at the historic Café Trieste, 601 Vallejo Street in North Beach.
David Amram is a living American treasure. He plays French horn, piano,
guitar, flute percussion, and a variety of folkloric instruments from 25 countries. David has recorded and collaborated with all the jazz greats including Lionel Hampton, Charles Mingus, Dizzy Gillespie, Thelonious Monk and Betty Carter. He is considered one of the founders of World music.
David has composed over 100 orchestral and chamber works, written two operas, many scores for theatre and films, including Splendor in the Grass and the Manchurian Candidate. Since being appointed first composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic in 1966-67, he has become one of the most acclaimed composers of his generation, listed by BMI as one of the Twenty Most Performed Composers of Concert Music in the U.S. since 1974.
Stephen and Chris Barry paint a unique picture of their own life-experiences through their poetry. Their highly acclaimed readings on the East Coast have drawn new and enthusiastic audiences, many of whom have never heard poetry read aloud before. Both of the Barry brothers are officers in the Merchant Marine, and like Homer, Jack London, Herman Melville and Jack Kerouac, they write in a memorable way about their life at sea, as well as the struggles we all share with our lives on shore.
Bassist Peter Barshay has established a strong reputation over the years from his sideman work on both the New York City and Bay Area jazz scenes. He has performed with such jazz luminaries as Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Stitt, Eddie Henderson, Pharoah Sanders, Blue Mitchell, Joe Henderson, Joe Lovano and Bobby McFerrin. On his debut recording as a leader, “Pit Of Fashion (2000)”, the bassist-composer stepped out as a leader in his own right.
Jeff Massanari is one of the most in-demand guitarists in the Bay Area jazz world. Jeff's first two recordings earned him recognition as the "Spotlite on New Talent" in Guitar Player magazine. Jeff’s newest highly acclaimed release is "For the Music (2000)”.
Dorka Keehn, aspiring jazz singer, will join David Amram’s jazz trio for a few tunes. She first met David when producing her film “New York and the Fifties (Showtime),” based on Dan Wakefield’s memoir.
